Ngorongoro Tortilis Camp

Ngorongoro Tortilis Camp

How fortunate we are to share this protected space with one of the most majestic tribes in the world – the proud Maasai, still living their ancient ways up in the thin crisp air of the Ngorongoro Highlands.

The Ngorongoro Tortilis Camp respects this space and incorporates the Maasai into much of the activities of this Tortilis Camp. Our Ngorongoro Tortilis Camp is a special oasis nestled under a forest canopy at the end of a valley. A magical place of dappled light, surrounded by the lushest green vegetation, and buzzing with an energy of this high altitude wonderland. Just 13km away is the Ngorongoro crater rim. The crater itself is a must-visit wonder of nature, but you’ll be happy to be staying away from the cold and mist which envelops the crater rim for much of the year.

This Tortilis Camp has many activities to enjoy. Join the Maasai staff for a hike to the top of Mount Makarot a steep and exciting challenge with a peak over 3100m and when you reach the summit enjoy the rewards with spectacular views of the Serengeti, a peek into the Ngorongoro crater, and, on a clear day, Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance.

On offer too is an authentic Maasai wedding with the local tribe. A pulsating experience and unique spectacle with you and your partner at the very centre of it all.

Something we’ve never experienced before. Place is absolutely amazing! Location below the trees is like living in jungle. Tent was great, very clean, prepared as desired. Level of service, kindness of staff is - with no doubt - EXCELLENT. We wish we could spent there more nights

Our Tortilis Tents

Our tents are always a surprise to our visitors who feel more like they are in a comfortable lodge than in a simple tent. We’ve put a lot of thought and creativity into the layout and interior design, as well as the decoration, materials, fabrics and items that each of our tents are created from. The result is a unique East African, spacious and comfortable space to feel welcome in for the duration of your Tortilis Experience.

Our tents are built to easily withstand the elements. Thick canvas protects against rain, and a system of adjustable tent flaps over mesh windows surround the tent. The tent flaps are easily adjusted to allow maximum airflow in the day. Our staff know just when to open and close the flaps and will do this for you to keep your tent in an optimal condition to the current weather conditions and time of day

One of the reasons our tents are always in such good condition is because of our system of constant maintenance by our own staff. We build the tents from scratch in our own Tortilis Camps HQ in Arusha with staff skilled in joinery, metalworking, sewing, design and construction. This way we are able to keep the tent spaces constantly developing and functioning to meet our visitors needs for the most comfortable stay in Northern Tanzania. All of the Tortilis Camps work off the same blueprint, which contributes to the smooth running of the systems to make our tents a pleasure to stay in.

Locking Away Valuables

We have very few safety concerns at the Tortilis Camps due to implementing measures from our experience to prevent incidents. When you arrive you can lock away valuables in a box with a strong padlock provided in every tent. We’ve designed this for you to be able to lock away a whole bag, a large camera lens or other large items. You will then be able to keep the key for the padlock for your own use when needed.

Walking Around Camp

It is safe to walk around the camp during the day, however, it is an unfenced area so visitors need to still be vigilant. At night, we have escorts available constantly to walk you from your tent to the mess tent. Our Maasai staff carry out this function and are able to walk with you anytime you feel the need for some local assurance. All the paths are lit when it gets dark and each tent has a powerful torch for your own use.

Tent Security

Tents have two robust front flaps with large zips top to bottom. These zippers need to be shut, at least one during the day and both at night when not using the entrance to the tent. The flaps do not have and do not need locks, and staff will also make sure the flaps are kept zipped closed.
